Love is in the air, or at least the smell of ink and California Wash. Yes! We’ve been busy bees in recent weeks, designing and printing a fabulous collection of sweetheart cards.

We’re in an Art Show

We are excited to announce Swayspace’s participation in a show highlighting the work of master craftsmen and artisans working in New York City. The show is part of the LVMH-sponsored project The Art of Craftsmanship Revisited: New York and opens this Wednesday 26 May. The show will be open to the public June 5 – June 27, 11 AM – 5 PM at Nolan Park on Governors Island, which is a great place to visit in the summer in New York, so we hope you can make it out to see and celebrate the hard work of these craftsmen and students.

This has been a great opportunity for us to peruse our archives for some of our favorite commercial work like the 2009 Feltron Annual Report as well as the kind of interesting printed ephemera that we’re always producing.

Here’s how this came about:

Over the past winter and spring we hosted a group of Parsons fashion design students as part of The Art of Craftsmanship Revisited: New York. Andres, Chi, Payal, Sherman, and Sooji of the team Half-Broken Things spent many hours in the Swayspace printshop absorbing many fine points about letterpress printing. These lessons informed their final project, a dress and short film.

Having been the ironic printers without business cards for some time, it’s incredibly exciting to finally have fresh sets in our hands. It was a long process of Patrick doing several designs and everyone voting on their favorites. We finally settled on a design and what followed was another long process of printing. We really went to town doing them in 4 colors. We did 3 main color changes, along with some miscellaneous trials to essentially print over a dozen colors.

Some pictures from the last ‘Makers Market’ at the Old American Can Factory

I decided to branch out from the usual thank you notes, and went with some gold and a lovely purple for my set that day. Here’s the setup for the last card I printed—of course I had to go for ‘howdy’ if in this typeface.

In other happenings…

The other day, we got to take a field trip down the hall to our old space, now occupied by Nathaniel Rowan: Luthier and he graciously showed us what he’d done with the space and explained his violin-making process. Kind enough to let me snap a few shots too! Here are some in progress violins—the top left is a form for a viola and the others are in various stages of production. You can see the progression from the bottom shelf up.

A Seltzer Man never dies, he just loses his SPRITZ!

We’ve been using Eli Miller as our Seltzer Man for a few months now, and couldn’t be happier with the service.

Eli comes by every couple weeks armed with jokes, advice, and twenty bottles of delicious seltzer water. He uses antique glass bottles, which he fills himself in Canarsie. We go through about a case a week! There are so many great drinks to be made with seltzer:

Egg Cream: Mix chocolate or vanilla syrup ( Eli brings us Fox’s U-Bet) with milk, and then spritz with spritzer.

Lime Ricky: Mix simple syrup with juice from a quarter of a lime, cherry or strawberry syrup, and spritz!

I haven’t made the Lime Ricky yet, but I have been making all sorts of Italian and French sodas. All we need is malt and ice cream, and we would have the beginnings of a full soda fountain in the studio. I feel like this is something we should work towards.
