Stanford DAWN Website

Stanford DAWN (Data Analytics for What’s Next) was a five-year research project to make the power of machine learning more widely accessible. The team recognized that most of the work in developing an ML system goes into managing the data and infrastructure; inspired by this observation, DAWN aimed to make these tasks easier with a wide array of new tools.

We worked with DAWN on a website to commemorate the program and showcase the work of the many people involved. We wrote and illustrated short explanations of the project’s main goals to make the site accessible to a general audience, and we organized the researchers, articles, and projects so academics can find what they need. Based on the style of their preexisting logo, we used a graphic language that gave the site a distinctive voice while still appearing at home in Stanford’s content management system.

The DAWN logo was the one preexisting piece of design we had to work with. DAWN focused on four stages of the machine learning production process that they wanted to make easier; we associated those with the four steps of the logo, and we used that connection in several of the visuals.

Dawn 03 people — The program brought many people together to a degree unusual in academia. The website highlights all the people involved and serves as a hub with links to everyone’s individual webpages.

Dawn 04 steps — The homepage uses short explanations and illustrations to present the program’s goals to a general audience.

Dawn 05 project page — The projects, researchers, papers, blog posts from the old DAWN site, and other associated content are all brought together and cross-referenced.
